The history of the wine tavern '10er Marie'
When in 1740 the wine tavern in Alt-Ottakring number 10, which at the time was the suburb, belonged to the family Haimböck, it was already a well-known and well-frequented tavern. Guests came not only for the delicious wines and the atmosphere, but also to see the beautiful daughter Maria Haimböck. Since then the wine tavern has been known as the "10er Marie".
Although Marie had moved away from Vienna and her brother Joseph ran the tavern, the good reputation remained and many famous celebrities frequented the wine tavern '"10er Marie": Prince Royal Rudolf and his carriage driver Bratfisch, Franz Schubert, Johann Strauß father, the Schrammel brothers, Franz Lehar, Josef Weinheber, Emmerich Kálmán, Robert Stolz and the Viennese composer Karl Föderl.
Today the "10er Marie" is the oldest wine tavern of Vienna!
The wine tavern "10er Marie" over the years...
... and today
Since 1993 family Fuhrgassl-Huber have owned the wine tavern "10er Marie". Ms Gerti Huber jun., one of the four daughters of Ernst und Gerti Huber's, runs the traditional wine tavern.
Today the listed building is the last remnant of the old village in the middle of Ottakring. It represents an oasis of calm which offers relaxation and an escape from everyday stresses. Celebrities and artists as well as tourists and guests looking for a typical Viennese wine tavern enjoy their visits.
The owners of the wine tavern "10er Marie" are proud to provide a home to music and musicians, just like in old times: on the first Monday of a month the "Wiener Spatzenclub" meets in the wine tavern and invites musicians to organise an evening with typical and traditional Old-Viennese songs and music. The song 'Alt-Ottakring' by Richard Czapek is definitely the most famous of all the beautiful songs that have been dedicated to the wine tavern "10er Marie".
