Ottakring
According to estimations the area Ottakring has been populated since the 9th century, however, it first official record dates back to the middle of the 12th century relating to a bestowal of a vineyard. At the time a huge part of the estates belonged to the church. And today the names of roads and alleys still indicate the location of the former vineyards. The best wine, for example, stemmed from the area around the 'Roterdstraße', where nowadays our Wine Tavern Huber is located.
Again and again the village at the edge of the Viennese Woods was affected by the turmoil of wars and epidemics such as the Black Death and cholera. In 1656, the year of the Black Death, one fifth of the population died and in 1679 and 1713 a third of the population fell victim to the pest. In 1835 a major fire destroyed 52 of the 82 houses in Ottakring.
Ottakring as we know it today was founded between 1890 and 1892 by combining Ottakring and Neulerchenfeld. In the west it reaches deep into the Viennese Woods (Wilhelminenberg, Gallitzinberg, Liebhartstal). In the second half of the 19th century the dense population extended along the Thaliastraße far into the west – working class quarters developed and many traditional industrial and trade businesses were established in Ottakring.
Many of the old wine growers' houses fell victim to the urbanisation process. Fortunately, the buildings of the wine tavern '10er Marie' are listed. Had it not been the oldest wine tavern of Vienna would probably not exist anymore.
