Neustift am Walde Nr. 68
The house walls with their old construction number 12 date back to the year 1683, the year of the Turkish danger. Legoux was chronicled and named as the first owner before 1733 and in 1781 the property went over to Johann and Theresia Huber, the ancestors of today's owners. When in May 1809 the French cuirassiers plundered Neustift am Walde the house was owned by Matthias Wöchinger who fled to the Zierleitengraben. The French poured out 20 pails of wine. In 1861 the building caught fire. Although the main building was saved, the barn with 40 bales of straw and 200 meshes of grain, as well as the carriage house with its 100 centners of feed and all equipments were destroyed.
In the 70ies Ernst and Gerti Huber purchased the property number 68 and had the house altered according to the plans of Professor W. v. Hoesslin (the stage designer of the Vienna Opera house). Gerti herself took to the interior design and created the lovely, cosy décor. On Valentine's Day in 1973 Ernst opened the wine tavern, which at the time was particularly lavishly decorated. As for the name, Ernst got the idea when he was shovelling snow in the adjacent little alleyway – the Fuhrgassl.
From the first day on the Fuhrgassl-Huber was a business and the costly investments paid dividends. The building had to be extended twice in order to withstand the run of the gourmets of wine. Today the Fuhrgassl-Huber is one of the most popular Viennese wine taverns.
Family Huber's four daughters run the other four branches of the ever increasing business: Sissi is in charge of the wine tavern Huber of Roterdstraße, Ms Gerti jun. is in charge of the traditional wine tavern 10er Marie, her sister Renate runs the Hauerkuchl and the guesthouse Country House Fuhrgassl-Huber and Michaela ensures that everything runs smoothly in the Fuhrgassl-Huber.
