Neustift am Walde

An old wine growing village

Neustift am WaldeNeustift am Walde is an old wine growing village between Dreimarkstein and the hill Michaelerberg. It was first named in the chronicles in 1330. 1413 the estate went to the monastery Dorotheerstift in Vienna. This is also where the village name stems from: "the new monastery near the woods". We know from entries in the land register kept by the Dorotheer that at the time there were just 24 houses in Neustift.

The slowly emerging developments of Neustift were disrupted twice when the Turks raided and destroyed the majority of the village. Yet, the village recovered quickly and the number of inhabitants increased. There were already 524 inhabitants living in 72 houses in 1880 as we know from old family chronicles. Technical advance and progress could not be halted: Neustift was equipped with a post office in 1874, with a canalisation between 1890 and 1892 and with gas lighting in 1893!

In 1890/92 Neustift and other villages were combined to the 18th district of Vienna (Währing) and in 1938 it became part of Döbling (19th district).

In the Döbling's district emblem Neustift is represented by Saint Rochus (depicted as shepherd) whom the parish church in Neustift am Walde is consecrated to. The church developed from a little chapel with a wooden altar which was erected in 1713 to thank God for ending the Black Death.
When in 1784 Neustift became its own parish the chapel was renovated thoroughly: it was extended and refurbished and many of the tableaux and altars were brought here from the church Dorotheerkirche of the 1st district. Since then the parish has been part of the monastery Klosterneuburg.

As early as the 19th century the area became a popular destination for outings and summer retreats; artists came to this area to relax and many guests visited the little wine growing villages within the district. In Neustift itself many wine grower's have run their wine taverns for generations and many establishments still bear the same names as 300 years ago.

WinzerkroneThe work of a "guardian of the wines" can be traced back in the chronicles Neustifter Rieden to 1678. The guardian of the wines was in charge of supervising the vineyards, for example to limit grape thefts or losses through birds. The characteristic Viennese costumes for the guardians of the wines and the wine growers' crown were even depicted on the Austrian special stamps of 1995 and 1991.

The tradition of organising a fair in Neustift has also been upheld to nowadays. In the middle of the 18th century after a bad wine year the wine growers were forced to take their harvest crown (wine grower's crown) on a pilgrimage to Empress Maria Theresia to ask for a tax exemption. The Empress granted the exemption and returned their crown as a gift on condition to organise a fair every year.

And so every year in August the guardians of the wines followed by the old vintners and the bottle boys parade through Neustift and Salmannsdorf and stop in wine taverns. Numerous stands and a festive act entertain the visitors.
